Yes, Jesus Christ came to set all the captives free! However, each person must have the proper spiritual attitude to receive it. They must be poor in spirit according to Jesus Christ. If they are not, then they are not yet ready. Jesus Christ only healed and delivered from evil only those who met the correct standard of humility. He never healed a Pharisee or a Sadducee. There are many Christians today that carry a self-righteous perspective on God's word.
What is the root cause of demonic attacks?
A broken heart.
Luke 4: 17 - 18
17And Jesus was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:
18“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me [i]to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are [j]oppressed;
19To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”
Please note: Jesus Christ heals the broken hearted and sets free the captives in that order!
Please do not come to me wanting and exorcism or deliverance if your not willing to be healed first in your heart! I know that you have seen many YouTube videos where demons are cast out with out this process. I have followed up on many from those videos by tracking them down only to find out that they were worse off. The problem with these videos is that they do not offer any follow-up. No one has any idea haw they ended up in the long term. The same could be said of those that Jesus Christ healed in the gospels. Did He not warn them that something worse could happen if they did not correct their lives? This ministry of Jesus Christ is largely missing from today's Christian churches and doctrines.
Understand, demonic deliverance and exorcisms are NEVER routine. Satan is a consummate legalist and everyone has a different situation.
Healing from Soul Fractures
Satan's mechanism of disrupting a person's life is to begin the process of victimizing the individual at the earliest ages in life. Satan's plan is two prong, first to deceive a person that Jesus Christ is not who the bible says He is in that He is not the only Son of God who was the incarnate Word, that He lived without sin being the perfect lamb, that His death on the cross had no redemptive value from the stand point of His shed blood, that after His death He was not resurrected on the third day, that all power and authority was not given to Jesus both in heaven and earth, that Jesus cannot destroy the works of Satan, and that Jesus is seated at the right hand of God. If Satan fails in this first objective, He has already started the second prong of denying the fulfillment of God's promises that are to be inherited by the followers of Jesus Christ.
(Hebrews 6: 4 - 12:)
4 It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, 5 who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age 6 and who have fallen away, to be brought back to repentance. To their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace. 7 Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God. 8 But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless and is in danger of being cursed. In the end it will be burned. 9 Even though we speak like this, dear friends, we are convinced of better things in your case—the things that have to do with salvation. 10 God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them. 11 We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, so that what you hope for may be fully realized. 12 We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.)
Satan's plan with second prong is to implant his influence through the broken heart of a victimized Christian. This concept is call soul partitioning as described in
(Luke 11: 33-36) 33“No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light. 34 Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy your body also is full of darkness. 35 See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness. 36 Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines its light on you.”)
Any where a soul is partitioned, Satan's kingdom can be found. The soul of a person can be fragmented between light and dark kind of like a computer hard drive can have corrupted and non corrupted storage space. What is contained in the dark part of the soul? Its not just the memories of a traumatic event, but a continuing state of the real and active event still playing itself out in real time even though the event had occurred a long time before. Satan weaponizes the dark part of the soul fragment to use against the person. These dark parts are literal soul ties to Satan's kingdom. As long as the soul is fractured through emotional brought on by victimization, Satan's kingdom will have the continuing influence in the life of the broken hearted person to deny the manifestation of God's power to deliver them from this stronghold. First the Christian must me made whole before the exorcism can take place. The soul of a Christian must be whole for Satan's kingdom to no longer have the legal authority to remain. Consider that Jesus came to heal the broken hearted or those with fractured souls.
(Luke 4: 18) : 18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised...) It is the mission of Throne of Grace Church to do a complete work as directed in Luke 4: 18.
I get calls from individuals who are suffering from bipolar disorder, anxiety, fear, mental health issues, depression, addiction, demonic attacks, that have unexplained sickness, that are hearing voices in their minds that request an immediate deliverance or exorcism from demonic powers. In every case these individuals suffer from a broken heart or PTSD. The idea of just casting out demons is dangerous on many levels if first the person is not made whole.
Matthew 12: 43 - 45
Jesus said: "
43“When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none. 44Then he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when he comes, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order. 45Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it also be with this wicked generation.”
After 30 years of deliverance work, I can tell you from first hand personal observation that demons will often times return with seven times more oppressive power if the root cause of the reason for the original attack has not been dealt with. It is one of Satan's strategies that his kingdom be cast away from a person before they are ready, so that they can return more forcefully to finish the person off. Jesus Christ in many instances will not allow the exorcising of evil, if allowing it, only makes the person worse because they are not ready to keep secure the victory that He has promised. I tell you, if is very foolish to do exorcisms or deliverance if the root cause for the attack has not been dealt with. If a person comes to me saying they want a deliverance right away, I will likely tell them no, until the legal authority has been revealed and properly renounced or else worse will come upon them. Jesus Christ Himself, warned all those that He exorcised demonic authority from to weary not to fall back into their old habits less something worse come upon them!
There are two stages to exorcism and deliverance: 1) To be set free 2) To remain free
Who are best candidates for deliverance?
Those individuals who are poor in spirit. This is the first "Be Attitude" that Jesus Christ mentions at the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount.
Who are the worst candidates for deliverance? Self-righteous and religious Christians. Jesus Christ nor any of the original Apostles healed a sing Pharisee or Sadducee. There are many Christians today who have this characteristic. The person who needs to be delivered and set free from evil must have the appropriate level of desperation.
All deliverance is process that at times can take days, weeks, months, or years to complete. A Christian who will not move from a legalistic milk doctrine cannot be set free. The person must move on to spiritual maturity by learning to walk in the Holy Spirit and no longer by their carnal senses if they want total freedom from this world. How have I come to know when a person is set free from demonic attacks? When they no longer have any of the symptoms attached to them from evil and when their soul has been transformed through renewalship by the working power of the Holy Spirit. Completion of deliverance from evil requires submission to the authority of a true Apostolic Church. That is a church that is uncompromised by false, religious, and legalistic doctrines.
Many people suffer from deep wounds and emotional trauma because they have been the victims of some form of abuse in their past. Abuse can take many forms from physical abuse relating to sexual victimization or a predatory relationship in which a person was harmed. Abuse can be emotional from some form of rejection. These traumas can become "soul wounds" in an individual which leads to a partitioning of the heart or soul. When these deep wounds are not dealt with, they have the capacity to influence a person’s daily lives through dis-functional relationships, health related issues (diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, arthritis, etc), psychological issues such as depression, anxiety, fear, loneliness, bi-polar behavior, anger, feelings of rejection, financial misfortune, and multiple personality. A person life may appear "cursed" because they can never seem to get through all the emotional confusion or obtain a sense of self-worth and peace. The idea in healing is not to live a life by coping with soul wounds through various intellectual prescriptive reasoning (wound management) or through a lifelong dependence on psychotropic medications. “Wound management" models and long term psychotropic medication dependence is not healing. The bible book of John 10: 10 states "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly." Jesus came to give you abundance! Luke 4: 18 states the following: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised." Jesus Christ is the answer to being made whole. Through our ministry, we are able by the anointed work of the Holy Spirit to see these partitioned soul fragments heal and literally become re-unified with the whole or majority of the person. In this sense the victimized person becomes whole.
Most individuals that I encounter do not even know that they are fractured in their soul. They have not recognized through discernment that all their negative issues that continually happen in their lives are of a result to soul wounds. People just grow up and old and with these wounds by assuming that they are a natural part of life when in fact they are not. What is many times the case, the children of such a person end up with the very same problems as the parents and the issue continues like a curse from one generation to the next? It is the goal of our ministry to end this generational cycle.
GROWING TO SPIRITUAL MATURITY MINISTRY
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO MATURE YOUR FAITH IN GOD? AND WHAT IS THE PROCESS THAT LEADS A CHRISTIAN INTO SPIRITUAL MATURITY?
(Hebrews 6: 1 - 6)
1. Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, 2. Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. 3. And this will we do, if God permit. 4. For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, 5. and have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, 6. if they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God a fresh, and put him to an open shame.
Christian maturity is evidenced by the type of works being done by the individual Christian. If the works are of the flesh and not of the Spirit, then maturity as a Christian is lacking. In general, the Western Christian church has accepted a different standard for the works of the flesh versus the Spirit. In many western Christian theological circles, Christian maturity is defined by time developing a carnal and intellectual understanding of God's word as well as positional titles of stewardship managing church congregations or ministries. Both these elements alone do not substantiate maturity as a Christian.
As a teenager, I recall a denominational youth fellowship I attended in which the youth pastor would play a game to see who could recite certain passages of scripture or if anyone knew what passage of scripture by book, chapter, and verse the minister was quoting from. At that time, I began to believe that Christian maturity was for those who could "win the contest". The emphases of the drill seemed to place more on the carnal ability to memorize and regurgitate the word than to live a life of applying it. After all, to someone who is a new believer, the ability by others to have a deep and through knowledge of the bible would in their own eyes make them appear as a scholar on a comparative level. Knowledge of God's word is important, but to emphasize carnal knowledge as the basis to determine maturity is not spiritually sound. For more than a decade I would often ponder my maturity level as a Christian and I often based it on my being able to win theological debates or to demonstrate my knowledge of the Bible. One day after showing off my Biblical understanding to new believers, I felt that I was finally arriving in maturity as a Christian when the Holy Spirit challenged me to this question: Do you believe that you have more knowledge about the Bible than Satan? I began to realize as I pondered this question that Satan was there when all of the books of the bible were written. I new then that I had placed too much emphasis on Bible knowledge alone and there was more to growing in Christian maturity. After all, if knowing more about the bible would make me a better Christian then what was Satan's problem? When Satan tempted Jesus Christ two of three times, he quoted scripture to Jesus. ("It is written: turn these stones to bread in the first temptation, Jesus also replied: "men do not eat from bread alone but from the word of the mouth of the Lord.) Satan then took Jesus to a high pinnacle and told Him, "It is written: cast yourself from this pinnacle, for the angles will take charge over you and lift you up that not even your heal shall be dashed." Jesus replied, "It is also written, thou shall not tempt the Lord thy God.") Who was correct as they both spoke the truth? Did Satan the Father of Lies speak lies to Jesus? No. But Satan spoke truth through his self-righteous ness and Jesus through God's righteousness. Today, many Christians have yet to discern the difference. The hear quotations of scripture and assume that they are applied by the correct standard of righteousness. In the above scripture (Hebrews 6: 1-6), the Apostle Paul outlines the four corner stones of works that a Christian should identify for themselves. Knowledge is important and serves as the back drop for the corner stones, but it is the way that Christian biblical knowledge is applied that makes enables the manifestations of the corner stones in the works of the believer. As a Christian, in general what is the difference between the works of the flesh and the Spirit. Many believe that the works they are doing is of the Spirit when in actuality they are not. Satan would rather Christians perceive that the work they do, be of the Spirit rather than the flesh, because the works of the flesh are of no threat to him. The works of the flesh may appear to be of the Spirit because we base the works on what we may perceive the bible tells us to do or what a religious tradition dictates. The works of the flesh cannot disarm and cast out Satan's kingdom. The gospel of the kingdom which Jesus Christ, the Apostles, those that are discipled through the Holy Spirit preach is one of power and not word.
(1 Corinthians 4: 20)
20For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power.
The question of maturity as a Christian pertains on whether one can discern the difference between a doctrine of teaching of milk or of meat. In general, the milk doctrine is the godward parts of the gospels and Pauline letters. Roughly 20 percent of the new testament is the godward perspective and the other 80 percent (the cross bearing word) deals with overcoming the flesh, the world, and the devil's kingdom through spiritual warfare. In other words, the meat of the scripture is those parts that convict you and challenge you through the conviction of the Holy Spirit to the shedding of the "old man." The new regenerated man, will have the "mind of Christ" walking as He walked in the Spirit and preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God with signs and wonders following. Another component of a lack of Christian maturity has to do with the "standard of belief" the Christian exemplifies. A mature Christian does not base his / her level of belief on the norm or standard of the typical Christian or church. They base their standard of belief to that exemplified by Jesus Christ and NOT any man. Consider the two following scriptures:
(John 14: 12-14)
12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.
(Mark 16: 17-20)
17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; 18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. 19 So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. 20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.)
The evidence of Christian maturity is ultimately found in the qualitative standard of Jesus Christ confirming the teachings of such a person with His power that heals the sick, binds the wounds of the broken hearted, and destroys the works of the devil by replacing his kingdom of darkness with God's kingdom. A mature Christian is one who has taken up his own cross of sanctification to the degree they have the mind of Christ through transformation. Consider this following scripture:
(Luke 13: 18-19)
18 Then Jesus asked, “What is the kingdom of God like? What shall I compare it to? 19 It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden. It grew and became a tree, and the birds perched in its branches.”
Why would Jesus compare His all powerful and holy kingdom to a mustard seed which is about the size of a grain of pepper? Because to the man who is carnal in his faith of the type that places more value upholding the traditions of religious men or as much one who unskilled in the "Word of Righteousness", the Kingdom of God will be overlooked and not recognizable. Those that walk in the flesh are those who have a naturalistic faith and not one that operates in the unseen or understood power of God. Those lacking in Christian maturity are those that wrap their faith to the bondages of the world. Those that are mature faith use the Spirit of the Word of God according to Hebrews 4:12, to transform the world by the elimination of bondages.
(Hebrews 4: 12)
12For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
So immature Christians are those that have a "mustard seed" mindset, because of their dependence on carnal reasoning and biblical intellectualism. They cannot either see or enter into the kingdom of God because of the unbelief possessed by their flesh. Finally a mature Christian is one that has the opposite of "mustard seed" mentality. The natural world has become the grain of pepper or "mustard seed" while the unseen kingdom of God is the "New World" or reality. In other words, reality to the mature Christian exists in the Spiritual plain of God's dimension.
(John 18: 36)
36 Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.”
It is my hope that you may be discipled by the power of the Holy Spirit to grow into the maturity of faith that Jesus Christ has called all that choose to follow Him.
Learn to Soul Shepherd your mind
It is very difficult to set individuals free from demonic attack or keep them free if I can not teach them this all important aspect of spiritual warfare. There is so much more to say about this but I though to only mention it here. Learning to do this requires discipleship and training. This in part what I do as a Pastor.
